Frank Herbert was born in 1920 in Tacoma, Washington. He ran away to Arizona in 1939 and lied about his age to get a job as a reporter. He married for the first time in 1940, but divorced five years later. During the Second World War he jouned the U.S. Navy as a p***ographer but was given a medical discharge after six months. In 1946 he attended the University of Washington where he met his second wife, Beverly Ann Stuart, in a creative writing class.

Dune was unlike any other science fiction novel of its day. Philp K Dick was born out of his time. One of the most significant sceince fiction writers pf the 20th century, he was also a complex and hugely troubled individual who spent most of his career in near-poverty, yearning for the mainstream recognition that he was destined to receuve only after his death.
