汪榮祖，原籍安徽旌德，1940年3月7日生於上海，長於台灣。國立臺灣大學歷史學系畢業，美國西雅圖華盛頓大學歷史學博士。2003年2月任國立中正大學講座教授。2008年任台灣國立中央大學講座教授。

著作介紹

汪氏是早期少數研究陳寅恪的專家之一，著有《史家陳寅恪傳》一書，對陳寅恪的學術成就作了全面評述，且文采不凡。由於早期關於陳寅恪的史料不多，無法深入討論，此書草草帶過之處甚多。另外，汪總站在陳一邊，對其學術甚少批評，論據往往是「亦人情之常」。經三十餘年不斷增修，《史家陳寅恪傳》從最初本之7萬字，再到15萬字，現在版本有20萬字。

《追尋失落的圓明園》是汪荣祖20多年不斷收集史料的成果展現，也是他的重要作品。

與汪合著《蔣介石評傳》的李敖對汪榮祖如此評價：“台大歷史系老同學汪榮祖是我最佩服的歷史學者。在我眼中，成為歷史學者除了對歷史在行外，還得有偉大的正義感——兩者兼備者，榮祖要列前茅。”

但2009年李敖在【李敖語妙天下】節目中也曾批評過汪「迴避」美國歷史相關的主題、「不願」與李合著批判美國歷史的書，甚至開玩笑地說：「榮祖在這一個單項上，是我李敖的敵人。」

while I spent so many hours on things that meant absolutely nothing to me personally: movie stars, supermodels, the latest noise out of Princess Di or Madonna or John F. Kennedy, Jr. In a strange way, I envied the quality of Morrie’s time even as I lamented its diminishing supply.

So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they’re busy doing things they think are important. This is because they’re chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.

I thought about all the people I knew who spent many of thei***aking hours feeling sorry for themselves. How useful it would be ...

1.来日无多和毫无价值不是同义词。

2.人生最重要的是如何施爱于人，并去接受爱。爱是唯一的理性行为。

3.当你觉得它可怕时，它才可怕。

4.我知道年轻也会是一种苦恼，所以别向我炫耀年轻的魅力。那些来找我的孩子都有他们的烦恼：矛盾、迷茫、不成熟、活着感到累，有的甚至想***...而且，年轻人还不够明智。他们对生活的理解很有限。衰老并不就是衰败，它是成熟。接近死亡并不一定是坏事，当你意识到这个事实后，它也有十分积极的一面，你会因此而活得更好。

5.无论我生活在哪里，我都会遇到一些对新的东西充满了占有欲的人，想拥有新的汽车，想拥有新的财产，想拥有新的玩具。然后沾沾自喜地向你炫耀：“猜我得到了什么？猜我得到了什么？”你知道我对此是怎么解释的？这些人都渴望得到爱，但又得不到，于是就接受了这些替代品。他们乐于接受物质的东西，期望能得到类似于拥抱的感情回报，但这是行不通的。你无法用物质的东西去替代爱，善良、温柔或朋友间的亲情。

6.这个社会在想要什么和需要什么这个问题上是很困惑的，你需要的食物，而你想要的却是巧克力圣代。你得对自己诚实。你并不需要最新的跑车，你并不需要最大的房子。实际上，它们不能使你感到满足。你知不知道真正使你感到满足的是什么吗？是给予他人你应该给予的东西。

7.如果你想对社会的上层炫耀自己，那就打消这个念头，他们照样看不起你，如果你想对社会的底层炫耀自己，也请打消这个念头，他们只会嫉妒你。身份和地位往往使你感到无所适从。唯有一颗坦诚的心方能使你悠然地面对整个社会。

When a collegue at Brandeis died suddenly of a heart attack,Morrie went to his funeral.He came home depressed.

"What a waste,"he said."All those people saying all those wonderful things,and Irv never got to hear any of it."

"Accept what you are able to do and what you are not able to do"; "Accept the past as past,without denying it or discarding it";"Learn to f***ive yourself and to f***ive others";"Don't assume that it's too late to get involved."

"Dying," Morrie suddenly said,"is only one thing to be sad over,Mitch.Living unhappily is something else.So many of the people who come to visit ...

"All this emphasis on youth--I don't buy it,"he said."Listen,I know what a misery being young can be,so don't tell me it's so great.All these kids who came to me with their struggles,their stife,their feelings of inadequacy,their sense that life was miserable,so bad they wanted to kill themselves.

"And,in addition to all the miseries,the young are not wise.They have vey little understanding about life.Who wants to live every day when you don't know what's going on?When people are manipulating you,telling you to buy this perfume and you'll be beautiful,or this pair of jeans and you'll be ***y--and you believe them!It's such n***ense."

"It is impossible for the old not to envy the young.But the issue is to accept who you are and revel in that.This is your time to be in your thirties.I had my time to be in my thirties,and now is my time to be seventy-eight.

"You have to find what's good and true and beautiful in your life as it is now.Looking back makes you competitive.And,age is not a competitive issue."

He exhaled and lowered his eyes,as if to watch his breath scatter into the air.

"The truth is,part of me is every age.I'm a three-year-old,I'm a five-year-old,I'm a thirty-seven-year-old,I'm a fifty-year-old.I've been through all of them,and I know what it's like.I delight in being a child when it's appropriate to be a child.I delight in being a wise old man when it's appropriate to be a wise old man.Think of all I c...

"Part of the problem,is that everyone is in such a hurry,"Morrie said."People haven't found meaning in their lives,so they're running all the time looking for it.They think the next car,the next house,the next job.Then they find those things are empty,too,and they keep running."

Once you start running,I said,it's hard to slow yourself down.

"Not so hard,"he said,shaking his head."Do you know what I do?When someone wants to get ahead of me in traffic--when I used to be able to drive--I would raise my hand..."
