原文赏析:

Fate, however, seems to be not so much unexpected as unavoidable.

He chose a place for his camp which was strong enough, but not very well supplied with water. This, they say, he did delibratelyso as to encourage his soldiers to fight. Certainly when there were many complaints from people saying that they would be thirsty, Marius pointed to a river running close by the native encampment and said: "There is some drinking water for you, but you will have to pay for it with blood." "Why, then," they said, "don't you lead us against them at once, before our blood dries up?" To which he replied in a mild voice: "First we must fortified the camp."

so he was left on the side, like military material in peace time.

The difference between their fortunes was thus only 1000 sesterces, ...

Pompey now asked for a triumph. The request was opposed by Sulla who pointed out that legally this was an honou***hich could be given to a c***ul or praetor, but to no one else... And if Pompey, who had scarcely grown a beard as yet, and was too young even to be a senator, were to ride into Rome in a triumphal procession, people would be angry not only with Sulla’s government but also with Pompey himself for receiving such an honour... Pompey, however, was not in the least frightened. He asked Sulla to bear in mind the fact that more people worshipped the rising than the setting sun...When he was told what it was he was astounded at Pompey's audacity and cried out twice in succession: "Let him have his triumph!"

"knowing that you are mortal, you are all the more divine"
