PreSchool-K ``Oh Dear!'' is young Buster's resp***e each time

that his search for eggs on his grandmother's farm is futile. The

pattern is the same throughout his search: he looks in the barn, or

sty, or pond, where a flap can be lifted to reveal the animal that

lives there, *** the sound associated with it. The animal is not

labeled, so young listeners are called upon to make the

identification themselves. When Buster finally tries the henhouse,

a second flap reveals the eggs beneath the hen. The book has an

attractive, open look, with much white space and clear, large type.

The animals and farmyard scenes are large, *** forms in bright

colors. Unfortunately, Buster and his grandmother are doll-like in

their circle heads, dot eyes, and red-spotted cheeks, and do not

hold the same appeal. Lift-the-flap books are a gimmick that

children love, but these flaps are particularly fragile, and each

is hinged in a different place. Eager hands tugging at them will

easily result in a cry of ``Oh dear!'' before too long. David Gale,

Rod Campbell has been writing and illustrating children's books

for over twenty years and is something of a pioneer in the field of

novelty publishing. From the classic DEAR ZOO to other firm

favourites such as IT'S MINE, MY PRESENTS, OH DEAR! and BUSTER'S

DAY, it is the simplicity and gentle humour of his books that has

always proved to be so wonderfully effective with very young

readers. Rod now lives in London, where he continues to write and

illustrate.
