　　The ninth collaboration between librettist William Schwenck Gilbert and composer Sir Arthur Sullivan, The Mikado ran for nearly two years after its 1885 premiere at London's Savoy Theatre. It remains undiminished in popularity, and audiences still delight in the tale of Nanki-Poo, the Mikado's son, and his thwarted passion for the lovely Yum-Yum, unhappily betrothed to Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner. "Three little maids from school are we" and "The flowers that bloom in the spring, tra-la" are just two of the many graceful, well-loved melodies that distinguish this beloved two-act operetta.

The present performing edition is a newly edited, newly engraved full-score publication based on Sullivan's autograph and the first edition of the full score published two years before the composer's death. Edited by Carl Simpson and Ephraim Hammett Jones, it corrects a large number of errors and incorporates libretto changes made by Gilbert after the original publication.
