Plutarch's life spanned the second half of the 1st century AD.

He was highly educated in rhetoric and philosophy at Athens but his

deep interest in religion led him to Delphi, where he was

eventually appointed a priesthood. He travelled, most crucially to

Rome, where he lectured and made friends of c***iderable influence.

He wrote and taught throughout his life.

Meanwhile Alexander had become so much obsessed by his fears of the supernatural and so overwrought and apprehensive in his own mind, that he interpreted every strange or unusual occurrence, no matter how trivial, as a prodigy or a portent, with the result that the palace was filled with soothsayers, sacrifices, purifiers and prognosticators. Certainly it is dangerous to disbelieve or show contempt for the power of the gods, but it is equally dangerous to harbour superstition, and in this case just as water c***tantly gravitates to a lower level, so unreasoning dread filled Alexander's mind with foolish misgivings, once he had become a slave to his fears.
