米勒提出了揭示由成功走向失败的四条主要“轨道”：

* 焦点轨道造就了谨小慎微、质量导向的手工艺人。把具有熟练工程师和经营无懈可击的组织变成了僵化的、迷恋于细节的补锅匠，企业保守的技术统治文化用完美的但却是不相干的东西疏远了顾客。

* 冒险轨道改变了成长导向、企业家式的创业者，把由富有想象力的领导和创造性策划与财务参谋人员所经营的公司转变为冲动的、贪婪的帝国主义者，手忙脚乱地扩张到他们一点也不懂的行业，严重滥用组织的资源。

* 虚构轨道把卓越的研究开发机构、弹性的智囊经验机构及优异产品的先锋性组织，变成了乌托邦式的逃避现实者，由一帮不守秩序的科学家所经营，把资源浪费在毫无希望、自以为是的未来发明上。

* 脱钩轨道把具有无可比拟的营销队伍、优秀的品牌和广阔市场的商人组织变成了没有目标的官僚的随大流者，销售偶像模糊了设计主题，产生了一些过时的不连贯的“我也有”产品。

注意建设性结构是如何变成破坏性结构的——不过还是结构。为避免人们对米勒的论述长生怀疑，他举出了那些已“陷入”这些轨道的公司有IBM、宝洁公司、德州仪器公司、克莱斯勒公司、通用汽车公司、苹果计算机公司、迪斯尼公司等等。简直是一个蓝绶带名单！也许我们就是要经受成功与失败、增长与衰败的循环（当然，这就是人类的“自然”状况）。
