原文赏析:

Payne was discussing the American bombing raids on *** the year before, somewhat approvingly, and the Chinese sage was nodding his head in a way that Payne assumed signified complete agreement. It was only after the man began to speak that he realized “for the thousandth time since I came to China that a man who nods his head may actually be expressing the most profound disagreement. "I was in Chongqing during the ***rdment. I have no wish that the Japanese should share the same fate. Nothing is so terrible, nothing is so remorseless, nothing so revolting to the soul as a ***rdment. The soul cannot suffer in peace after such indignities. When Needham estimated the book will have seven volumes and ten years to complete, not everyone accepted the plan with the same equanimity. It was swiftly pointed out by a small group of naysayers that as a reader appointed by the university, Needham was still officially supposed to be teaching-that, after all, was why he was paid. Instead of writing a book about China he should simply stick to teaching undergraduate embryology and carry on with his research into the mysteries of such biochemically fascinating substances as inositol, which had occupied him six years earlier, before he had taken off for Chongqing in 1942. But luckily only a very few took so stringent a view, and within weeks Needham’s interest in China was formally recognized by the university, and he was granted official l...
