我觉得美国人没有深度，不自在，只有表面的玩笑和队友之间的逢场作战的快乐，这些从来没有满足我。我总是觉得，置身同辈美国人之间，我若有所失，总想念别的语言，尤其是阿拉伯语——我在英语之外的生活、思想、感觉的语言。他们似乎不太重感情，不大有兴趣表达自己的态度和反应。这就是美国生活那种超常的意识形态思考、大家看同样的电视节目，穿同样的衣服，把日常生活的复杂交流局限于一种缺乏反思、记忆也是没有位置的最低层次。

不幸，他也在我内心留下另外一些东西，就是死命坚持做有用的事，事情一定要做好，“永不放弃”，可以说绝少例外。我不知闲暇或放松为何物，更特别的是，我没有累积成就的意识，每天都像一个新学期的开始，背后是大大空空的暑假，面前是不确定的明日。久而久之，“爱德华”变成一个苛求的监工，每天忙着登记缺点和失败，也努力累积义务和承诺，两张表此消彼长，又是彼此取消。“爱德华”每天都必须重新出发，一天既了，都觉得没有多少事情对劲。

我母亲之遥离开阿拉伯语而说起英语，就生出一种比较客观而且严肃的语气，驱走她第一语言阿拉伯语那种充满宽纵和音乐性的亲昵。

我有本事表面上做功课，念书或练钢琴，同时心里想着完全不同、完全属于自己的事。

我了解到这两个字讲的是表面功夫的重要：fair play意思是大声告诉一个大人，说你的对手做了“不公平”的行为，sportdmanship意思是愤怒和抽粪绝不可以形于色。
