The Blaue Reiter ("Blue Rider") group of artists was formed in Munich in 1911 on the initiative of two outstanding artists: Wassily Kandinsky,the fundamental pioneer of purely abstract painting, and Franz Marc, the creator of mysterious, abstract animal pictures.
